Sharepoint 2010 and Wildcard inclusion question

Hey everyone, I currently have a 2007 environment where the URL would be http://portal.abc.com and then the company uses one site collection for everything so purchasing is http://portal.abc.com/purchasing for their URL as it's all one site collection.

We're moving to sharepoint 2010 and what I'd like to do is split up the site collections so there is multiple databases to break things up a bit. the problem is when i set the landing page to explicit inclusion for the path if i want to make the purchasing portal it'd have to be http://portal.abc.com/sites/purchasing instead of http://portal.abc.com/purchasing. Now my issue is we have certain applications that look for http://portal.abc.com/purchasing and if I set the main site to wildcard inclusion I can set the home page to http://portal.abc.com/home but the issue is if I go to http://portal.abc.com i basically get a error that says;
HTTP/1.1 200 OK Server: Microsoft-IIS/7.5 Date: Thu, 16 Jun 2011 11:55:27 GMT Connection: close

Do you guys know a way to make it so if someone types in http://portal.abc.com they would get redirected to http://portal.abc.com/home so people can easily find the home page as well that would like me create the http://portal.abc.com/purchasing (and all other department URL's)
