SUM SQL Server 2008 - Could not find stored procedure SUM

I have a SQL Server 2008 table with a smallmoney field, Amount.

I am trying various ways to sum the column:

SUM([Amount]) AS Amount FROM Payment

I get the error "Could not find stored procedure SUM" I've tried to sum an Integer field as well. It's not the field I'm summing, it's the fact the SUM doesn't exist.

What's going on here?

thanks.
