asked on

DNS Setup where the domain is the same but the subnet is different

Hi Experts,

First I will start with the background:

We have 13 stores each with store servers their primary function at the moment is to store files, and run our EPOS software, each store is on a different subnet i.e 192.168.storeno.10.

Our main office uses 192.168.99.whatever, This is at present where our current DNS Server sits.

What we want to achieve is:

Setup all the store servers to be DNS Servers, and then promote the servers to be member domain controllers of the same domain. We will not be using Child Domains for each site!

What my question is:

DNS is not my strong point, and as such I am not clued up on what needs to be done, so if someone could tell me roughly what needs to be setup in order to make this work on the same domain but different subnet. It would be most appreciated.

I know you would setup a zone of domain.local as you are staying on the same domain, and I would also imagine you would set up forwarders to the DNS servers at head office, but anything else in regards to delegation or the such like I am not sure where to go etc etc.

So if someone would be able to give me a brief overview of what needs to be done, and considered, it would be gratefully appreciated.

Yes the link between the stores are quite slow and all that going over the line would effect sales figures coming back etc etc I think. Hence why I was placing DNS on each of the servers and then doing it that way.

So if I do it the way you say to do it, which makes more sense and seems a lot more organised. In terms of client setup on the DC in the store I have dhcp setup so would I push out the DNS ip address of that store server to the workstations or that of the main office DNS servers?

As for the file server/app server role on this machine it will be moved on to another machine so it will not be a DC, DNS, DHCP, File & App server :) did forget to mention that in the first post.

Setting up Sites and Services first is a good idea as this will save you the step of moving the DC into the site after, but you can move them after.

If you're setting up DHCP on each office DC to distribute that office's local subnet, you'd put that office's local DC as the first DNS server and probably a head office DC as the second in the Server options.

Hi,

I have split the points up between the two of you because both comments were what I needed.

Twigahil - thank you very much for giving me the information on the best way to go about doing this and changing what could have been a messy route for me to go down. Really appreciate your help

PaciB - Thank you for going in to good detail as to what is needed to be done and why, that information was invaluable.

Thank you both.
