Recommend: SMB Fibre Switches ?

Hey everyone, we're an SMB business with 4 floors. We need to move into Fibre but which make/model we're not sure. We need 1 main Fibre switch itself, and 4 closet switches. We don't want to pay alot, but we don't want crappy equipment. I know Cisco brought out an SMB line so maybe them but i don't know which models that would be.
Could someone recommend something for more intro level ?

I would (nearly) always reccomend HP for L2 access and basic L3 switches, however most of the smaller ones only have two SFP ports.

If you can provide us with a little more information such as how many ports on each floor, and if you have a restriction on where the core has to be, a more creative answer might be possible.

I'm also interested in your reason for moving to Fibre.

Yes I've had Procurve's in the past they were nice. They were 2650's then. But we're looking for something a little cheaper. I did hear they had SMB models now but they have so many models I wasn't sure which.
Well for the each floor we need 1 - 48 port switch, POE, QoS, VPN, and WIFI plugged into them. My boss hasn't said if he wants L2 or L3 switches yet.
The core - it will be on the bottom floor of the building in the approx centre of the building. There shouldn't be a problem with getting the cables ran.
Reason for fibre ? We just current don't have any infrastructure across the entire building. Each floor/office has its own mini SOHO setup. Now we need to wire everyone together on a shared internet connection. Thats what drove this project. So we will need a 'router on a stick' configuration that everyone gateways to the web.
Thanks ArneLovius!

Unless you need fibre for distance (more than 100m) then I would stay with copper, alternatively, dpending on the bandwidth you need, how about "daisy chaining" the floors together, possibly with a top to bottom back link as well to make a loop (as long as you have spanning tree turned on...)  to get around having a "core switch"

For 48 port PoE switches I probably go with E2610-48-PWR for each floor. however I don't know if you need PoE for every port, is this to support VoIP phones ? or just a few WiFi access points ? If the latter, then I'd use power injectors, and possibly think about E4210-48G to go gigabit to the desktop.

Although there are switches available from Netgear, Linksys and D-Link, when you're up to 48 port PoE switches with VLAN capability, then I'd go wih HP. I've replaced countless Linksys and Netgear switches with HP switches over the years, and only replaced HP switches when people have movedfrom 10/100 to 10/100/1000 and 99% of the time I've replaced HP with HP, the only time I haven't, I've replaced them with Cisco.

There is something very compelling about a switch with a lifetime software maintenance, and hardware maintenance, they might cost more to purchase, but when you're still using them over 5 years later...

I would need more info before I could make a real recommendation, but a good start would be to consider the Cisco Catalyst 4500 series for a core switch and the Cisco Catalyst 2960 series for the access level closet switches.

Well,...I'm going to ask the obvious here.....

Why do you think you need Fiber?

1. Fiber is no longer faster than copper
2. Fiber does not reach farther than Copper (100m) except for certain types which go over a 1000m.
3. The only real practical true benefit of Fiber is the immunity to EM interference..

Is there any existing fiber or copper running between the floors of your building?

Hey Guys, yes we have fibre from year's ago put in for distance and 1Gb LAG's. The fibre runs from the 4th floor to the ground floor in a conduit, it's 6 fibre, we also continue on one of the fibre's out the building, and across the street to a remote backup server location. Basically switch to switch we are at 1Gb with fibre, but port to port we are at 100Meg, we want to move all the coper to 1Gb and use the existing fibre that's in place. Switches with 24-48 Port Gb Copper and 2-4 SFP or GBIC uplinks will work fine. Don't need to worry about Layer 3, but VLAN and Trunk/LAG's will be needed. How are the Cisco 200/300 Series Switches? or is there a low end HP Line as well?

Switches / Hubs
Switches / Hubs

A switch is a device that filters and forwards packets of data between LAN segments. Switches operate at the data link layer or the network layer of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model and therefore support any packet protocol. LANs that use switches to join segments are called switched LANs or, in the case of Ethernet networks, switched Ethernet LANs. A hub is a connection point for devices in a network. Hubs are commonly used to connect segments of a LAN. A hub contains multiple ports; when a packet arrives at one port, it is copied to the other ports so that all segments of the LAN can see all packets.
