Access 2003 in Vista

Hi all,

I'm having a silly problem!

I have a shortcut on the desktop which points to an Access database. Everytime I click on it, it produces a record locking file and therefore prevents Access from opening.

Is there something I should be on the lookout for as to the reason that this is happening?

Thanks

Opening access will create a Record-Locking file,  but this should not prevent Access from opening.
Are others able to open the database? Depending on the file size, it may take a while.

Two things to try;
1) Reboot the PC and try opening the file again
2) If you're still not able to open it, it may have become corrupted.  If you search for 'Repair Access' you'll find tools that can help repair a corrupt database, and whilst some are paid for, there are also others that are free - http://www.repair-access.com/download.htm as an example User generated image

Do you get any errors? If so, post them here.

Can you show the Target property of your shortcut?

What happens if you launch Access, and then try to open your database? Does it open as expected, or do you also have troubles with that?

Hi,

No I dont get any errors.... I did the following test.

I opened a blank Access database and did a shortcut in the desktop. Clicked on the Shortcut and a ldb. file is created on the desktop and the Access database does not open!!!

So I think this comes back to the question that LSMConsulting asked about the shortcut.

If you navigate to the folder in which the db is stored, right click and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut), does that shortcut then open the database?

Of course, the other question would be whether navigating to the folder and double-clicking to open the database from a non-shortcut also works?

I will try that now.... i.e.

navigate to the folder in which the db is stored, right click and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut),

I should point out that the database was designed with and earlier version of access but has been running fine in access 2003 for months and still opens ok. Its just that the shortcut won't work.

Hi,

By open i mean just that...the progam won't open/start.

Ok: I'll try to explain again.

I have a shortcut on the desktop pointing to an an MSAccess 2003 program. When I first click on the shortcut icon the program opens, i.e. the MSaccess database opens and is ready for use. When I finally exit the program, it closes alright. When I then click on the shortcut again,  some moments later, the program won't respond and nothing happens, displaywise. When I check the folder where the program resides there is a ldb file in the same folder.

I should point, like I said previously, that the database was designed with and earlier version of access but has been running fine in access 2003 for months and still opens ok. Its just that the shortcut won't work second time round.

I hope I've reported it better.

Thanks all.
