We have an older Xserve G4 (OS X Server 10.4.11) that freezes randomly. It will be fine for days and then will stop accepting VNC connections and does not respond to Keyboard/Mouse inputs locally. I can tell when this has happened without even trying to connect however, as the blue lights on the front are all on when this happens. Do these lights indicate an overload? I have the system set to automatically reboot when it detects a system freeze, but I have to reboot manually by holding down the power button and turning it back on.
Thanks for any help!

Have you checked the console logs to see what is going on?

You should also run Verify Disk from Disk Utility and check the S.M.A.R.T. status of your drives.

I checked the console, nothing really of interest, just some DNS stuff. The only crash report is for the Apple VNC Server, but that report was from back in May. SMART is verified on both drives, and no repairs were necessary according to disk utility. I repaired permissions too. Still scratching my head, we'll see when this happens next.

My apologies, this question is actually wrong now that I've taken more time to investigate. It looks like it's just a VNC or network issue. When the lights on the front go all blue, it can't accept VNC connections, viewers just hang at "Connection Established..." The machine isn't actually frozen, as I can still use it from the local console. I stop/start the Apple VNC server and boom, fixed. The blue lights even go out. Now, what could be causing the VNC server to freeze like this?

I'll try repair permissions... The VNC server isn't really under load, only one user can use it at a time. I haven't tried to SSH into it when this happens, but, like I said, I can go to a physical console and restart the VNC service and everything returns to normal.
