eSeries server's IBM ServeRAID is reporting a PFA error on one drive of a three drive RAID 5 array

Our IBM Server is reporting a PFA error on one of our mirrored disks.  In ServeRAID, it says Mirror disk = Primary.

I've got another hot swappable disk from an old server which I can use to replace this disk, do I need to format it first? Or can I simply set the PFA disk to Defunt and insert this new disk and it will automatically rebuild (wipe the old data)?

Also, will it cause me any problems when it says it is the Primary mirror disk?

Thanks in advance

I'm not familiar with eSeries, didn't know there was such a thing - but on most xSeries servers, you don't even have to mark it defunct, you can just pull the drive and put a new one in, and it should start rebuilding on its own.

What model of RAID controller is in it?

I've attached a screen shot which has the controller types and the type of HDD that is failing.

It's actually an xSeries, I made a typo.

So, in theory it should be safe not to mark it defunct and just put in the replacement drive, and it will reformat it automatically as part of the rebuild?

Thanks so much for your help so far.
I looked at the specs on the LSI 1030 - and from what I can tell it doesn't appear to support RAID 5.  Is this maybe a software RAID?  What does the configuration on that RAID1 show under logical drives.

If you have a RAID5, it's a software RAID, in which case you can't do a hot swap.  It may be a RAID1 with a hot spare, if this is the case, yes you can hot swap the drive.

Let me know if you have any more questions.
It says RAID1, we have removed previous failed hard drives while the machine is running, so I believe we can hot swap drives.

So to confirm, we don't need to make the failing drive as defunct, nor format the new drive before inserting it?
