Recently updated to Safari 5.1 and neither will load. I have disabled all securtiy software and re-nstalled but this has not made any dufference. I have also tried running CMD promp netsh winsock reset with administrator rights without success.

Can you give more info? Are you saying that when you try and run iTunes, it simply does not run since updating to Safari 5.1?

Have a look here:

The Safari page opens but it just hangs without loading - this is the same with the itunes store page within itunes. (All other aspects of itunes works fine)

All other browsers work fine. I have tried to open it outside of my firewall without success and I have reinstalled without success.
I get it. Are you, by any chance running Little Snitch, or some other firewall program? It is possible that you have not updated the rules for the new update of Safari? If you are running Little Snitch, open it up, delete Safari, and then re-add it back in.
I was running net nanny but this was never a problem before. I have unistalled it for a few days now but the symtons are still the same.

Looking at google - this seems to be a common problem.
OK. Let me check a few other things. It sounds like a network block to me (Zone Alarm for example?)

Have you tried disabling extensions to see if one is incompatible?
Extensions IN Safari that is...
I also found this on one site talking about this problem:
run CMD as administrator and execute: "netsh winsock reset"

Did not work for all, but worked for some with this problem.
I have tried netsh winsock reset without success.

I do not know / understand how to disable extentions and which extentions to disable - please can you advise.

Thanks

Keith
On Windows, go to Preferences, and then click on the Extensions tab.
You will see a list of extensions installed, but also a big switch on the top right that says ON and OFF. You can disable extensions by sliding the switch to OFF and then restarting Safari.
Sorry, that should say in windows go to Safari Preferences.....
There are no extentions installed and they switch is set to OFF.
OK... This is going to sound really stupid, because I am running out of ideas here, so here are some dumb ideas to try (again):

* I still think this is some firewall getting in the way. ZoneAlarm, Windows Defender, or something similar. Can you start up and turn off ALL your firewall software completely and see if it makes any difference. Since other browsers work, this seems like them most likely problem.

* Have you checked for a more recent update? I am hoping Apple realized that there was a problem and released another update. Always worth a check again.

* Uninstall completely, restart, and then reinstall. In reality it should make no difference at all, but something may have installed incorrectly.

* Use Firefox!  :-) I have sent a message to a friend at Apple, and am waiting for a response to see if they know of any such problems.

Sorry, not sure what else you can try, but I will keep thinking about this.
Oh, do check under Safari Preferences to be sure that no proxies are turned on. Go to Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies (Change Settings)
