VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.3 - converting a remote W2008R2 guest on ESXi 4.1

Installed converter standalone, chose the first option (local install I think?)

Convert Machine -> select my powered-off vm...

I can connect and browse the remote VMs, but when I choose Next, Converter spins forever at "Retrieving source machine information..."

Also, am I on the right track to do a remote convert (I'm connected over a 1 megabit link, so the process needs to happen remotely).

Thanks,
-mjc

It's a hot conversion, you can either install on the machine to be converted (often easiest, as it get's over permission issues), or remote conversion.

Both cases, the machine must be on for conversion.
And the Users Guide is also a good resource to follow:

Seriously? I could have sworn it told me it could not convert a running VM.

So now, I guess Converter left a lock when I closed it. I can't power on the VM.

Reason: Failed to lock the file.
Cannot open the disk '/vmfs/volumes/4e0d0b4d-8405998f-daa2-001372fa68b8/medapp1/medapp1.vmdk' or one of the snapshot disks it depends on.
First question, does the VM have any snapshots?

seems a very odd message...
1 of the great reasons of using Converter to P2V is ability to have source machine (VM or phys) powered on.

Are you sure you have no snaps on the VM? Do you have backups running against this VM?
No snapshots.

The lock finally cleared on its own after 10 minutes.

So now I can start it up. Proceeding.
Ok guys. I now know I'm not crazy.

Did you download and install VMware-converter-all-4.3.0-292238.exe ?

@hanccocka: Yes, that is the installer i used.

@coolsport00: You are right, I had selected Infrastructure.

So now my question is, will this convert happen locally on the ESXi host? I don't have the bandwidth to transfer a machine right now. It doesn't use my workstation as a hub for this does it?
So I take it I need to install the converter agent on the guest?
No, not at all......just waiting for video to upload...

Yes, Windows Firewall is always a problem, we generally knock it off, and add it back on.

If you install on the machine to be converted, you always get less issues, with firewalls, permissions etc
Thanks for the excellent handholding guys! Sorry if I ask a lot of questions when I'm working on a project. You are my outsourced IT dept, so forgive me if I ask things rather than research them. I've got a dozen things going at once, so its awesome to throw it over the wall at you and have an answer in parallel. Hopefully I can return the favor if you come into my zones sometime. :)  -mjc
