Windows XP SP3 Windows Update Not Working

If you right click on 'My Computer' and goto 'Properties' does it say that SP3 is actually installed?

It does.  It said it after my initial install using an XP SP3 install disk.  It says the same after I re-installed SP3 using the SP3 network install file.

If you click 'Start' --> 'Windows Update' then on the left click on 'Review your update history' is there anything in there with a failure?
The do a 'Start' --> 'Run' and type in 'mrt' and hit OK and run a scan

I tried the resetting windows update FIXIT and that didnt work. (non aggressive)

I cant even get into Start -> WIndows Update.  It brings me right to the 2497281 page.

Run -> MRT doesn't do anything - File not found

Hmm. How are you accessing the windows update? Open your IE browser then goto 'Tools' and 'Windows Update' and try it that way.

Installed the latest update agent
Installed IE8

This didn't seem to work
    Open Command Prompt: Start -> Run... -> cmd -> OK
    Stop Automatic Updates Service: net stop wuauserv
    Register wups2.dll: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll
    Start Automatic Updates Service: net start wuauserv

Still getting the same page when trying to run updates

Try checking if the there was a problem with the service pack install


    Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\svcpack.log, and then click OK. The Svcpack.log file opens.
    On the Edit menu, click Find.
    In the Find what box, type DoRegistryUpdates failed, and then click Find Next.

is it 200 or 300 ??

CSD version = 300

Nothing in svcpack.log that says DoRegistryUpdates failed

Do you get the yellow shield when running ?? <<give it a minute or two

wuauclt /detect now didnt do anything...gave it about 5 minutes.

No spyware on it, updates was the first thing i tried after a fresh install.  I have MS security essentials running on it now.

Not sure. Its a fresh install of windows.  I'm going to try a re-install using a factory dell xp sp2 disk.  See what happens.

I would use NLITE to slipstream SP3 into it and then use that

Just used a Dell XP SP2 disk.  Installed XP, installed dell NIC driver.  Installed SP3 directly from microsoft site.  WIndows update.  FAIL  

I've done this a thousand times.

What the hell? Maybe a microsoft issue?

As per the link below, you may need to run 'proxycfg.exe -u' (This command imports the Internet Explorer proxy settings of the current user).

I think the key was to use the /wuforce switch.
