You can use "pmap core" and/or "pstack core" to read core files.

pmap - display information about the address space of a process

pstack - print a hex-symbolic stack trace for each lwp in each process

In the old days I used 'adb' to look at stack dumps to scheck why a program crashed. Nowadays 'gdb' is available. Just depend on your UNIX/Linux system what's available. However, man adb will give you some clues.
