VM ESXi 4.0.0 Server Multip NICs Multiple Networks

I have an EXSi 4.0.0 Linux based server on a Dell Poweredge 2750 server.  The server has multiple network adapters.  I want to plug one adapter into a 10.1.x.x network and assign it to 1 virtual machine.  Then plug the other adapter into a different 172.x.x.x vlan and assign it to another virtual machine.  The only option i see is to configure multiple adapters for redundancy on the same network.

Is this possible?

You need to create 2 (two) virtual switches (vswitch).

vSwitch0
vSwitch1

you uplink vSwitch0 to network 10.1.x.x
you uplink vSwitch1 to network 172.x.x.x

and then create different portgroups or Virtual Machine Networks on both vSwitches, these virtual machines networks are then available to select in your virtual machine Network Interface Settings.

If you want to read more on networking in VMware ESX/ESXi, then I recommend the following:-

I would also recommend reading through the Networking Sections of the following guides to gain a better understanding of Networking in VMware ESX/ESXi.

OR

you could do the same thing, if you used vLANs within the ESX server, and presented a network TRUNK carrying all the VLANs to a single virtual switch.
