VM ESXi 4.0.0 Server Multip NICs Multiple Networks

I have an EXSi 4.0.0 Linux based server on a Dell Poweredge 2750 server.  The server has multiple network adapters.  I want to plug one adapter into a 10.1.x.x network and assign it to 1 virtual machine.  Then plug the other adapter into a different 172.x.x.x vlan and assign it to another virtual machine.  The only option i see is to configure multiple adapters for redundancy on the same network.

Is this possible?

OR

you could do the same thing, if you used vLANs within the ESX server, and presented a network TRUNK carrying all the VLANs to a single virtual switch.
and you select the network in the VM here, in this screenshot
