We need a way to limit the emails users are viewing, when accessing the email server through webmail, from outside our network.

When someone is on holidays, or on a business trip, and they login through www.ourmailserverwebmail.com they should only be able to see what we want them to see, and not all their emails.

We want to be able to specify folders, or even a date range of emails that a user can see. We are using Sun Java Communications Suite v5.

Is this in any way possible?

it seems like the email server need to even have such access control granularity based on the location. Typically based on the identity authenticated the access control should be able to check based against the system access. But there is a web server and email server access control involved. Such policy should either be in one of these server based on identity and location (or protocol). If not, a separate entity will have to come in such as web content filtering gateway e.g. check tags on specific parameters to prevent outbound traffic etc. Just some quick thoughts

I am also checking out that SSL VPN may be another option to have such policy set in since we are talking about remote user connecting back. You may want to check out one instance F5 Firepass @ http://www.f5.com/pdf/white-papers/fp-endpointsecurity-wp.pdf

There may be more of such as application level visibility at the gateway can help
