Need info on how outlook handles changes to default public folder store

We need to "point" all users to an alternate Public Folder server and need info on how/when that change is processed by Outlook clients. We tell the message stores what server to direct users to for public folder references. When you fire up Outlook you get a reference.  Last time we tried to make a "smooth" transition by doing a few mail stores at a time.  However, since people stare at these folders every second, the delay between users was painful for them.  So, this time, we want to move all users at the same time.  What I'm unclear on is WHEN that change takes effect.  When Outlook starts, certainly.  But only at startup?  Will it pick up a public folder reference change in the middle of operations?  If your connection sits idle, or your connection to PFs goes idle, will it check again?  I have no idea! Any assistance would be appreciated.

The only way I know of getting all users on a server to transition at same time is to restart the IS. Not pretty but will definitely cause the clients to pick up new PF setting. Make sure the replicas are accessible before doing this.

Even in E2K10, there is NO nice failover between PFs because it does not use the CAS server functionality - it points directly to the IS.

So since I have heard no one else pipe up about this i am guessing this is going to be the best answer. It makes sense, I just wish there were a nicer more controlled way to do this.
