emails not populating in inbox

I had an end user tell me that yesterday their inbox said it had 14 unread emails in it but the unread emails did not populate the inbox until this morning. What could have caused this?

He probably activated (by acident) some kind of view, that was filtering out those e-mails.
Today, after a clean boot, it reverted to default view (All e-mails).
It would explain the scenarion, I think.

that could definitely be a possibility. Anyone else have any ideas? This end use will never accept that answer.
