Im using sharepoint 2010 wss enterprise.  My company wants to setup a collaboration site.  The kind of site where people can make announcements to everyone, share documents with everyone, have team/project sites, share calendars, misc lists etc.  This would be departmental in nature.

What im confused about is what template to start with.  How do i create the homepage?  Is it a blank site that has features enabled for collaboration?  Is it a teamsite template that wraps around other teamsite templates?  Basically I want a home page with departmental links to collaboration sites.  Ive given up on the idea of sprinkling in any publishing because it looks like a nightmare to try and combine the two.

Thanks.

Team Site would work for you.  You could make the department sites as subsites or site collections under the top level site.  If you do site collections, you would manually add links for them to the Navigation on the home page.

Ok.  But for some reason I cant navigate from for example Information Technology teamsite back to the Collaboration Home ie the root.  Unless I click on that navigate up icon at the top of the page.

Cant I put a link on subsite page that links back to home root?

Ok so here is the dilemma.  When I go to a subsite/teamsite page for lets say dept Information Technology.  The links at the top have a Home link.  But that Home link is the IT home now the collaboration site home.  I need a link to the home home.  So far Ive put it in the quick launch but I dont know how to get any links in the top nav bar.  Also where do I change the entire site banner logo?

The only way I know how to do what you are wanting for all future sites, is to hide the Home tab, and put your own Home navigation item in the nav bar.  You must use SharePoint Designer to do this.

Or, you should be able to go to Sites Settings - Top Navigation and delete the current Home item.

As far as the banner, you need to customize your master page in SharePoint designer.

This should be opened as a seperate question.  Your original question has been answered.

Actually it relates to the link question because if you delete the document center the nav link should go with it.

It doesnt relate to this:

We aren't allowed to roll to other questions.  You have a problem that a link that was auto-created when you created a subsite, isn't being removed when you delete the site.  This is a totally different issue.
