Iwe had a dell poweredge 600sc with ide raid 1 configuration. the raid controller, memory and hard drives fried. i have a backup but after a restore, MS says i have to activate it before i can log on. called MS and dell and was told that the code will not work because its tied directly in the dells service tag. I have purchased a new HP proliant microserver only to find out it only supports 2008 64 bit. is there any way yo transfer the inforamtion stores from the echange 2003 to the sbs 2008

I am thinking of downloading the 2008 server 64 bit free trial and loading exchange 2003 on it. if i do that can i add the users install the exchange, stop the services, copy over the information stores and assign the mailboxes tio the users new ssid?

You cannot install exchange 2003 on a windows 2008 (32 or 64bit) OS.
see the supportabillity matrix: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff728623.aspx

Another thing would be if you are doing a complete new installing of exchange 2003 this will be a complete new domain so does not match with the existing exchange db. But it could work if the following settings are exactly the same:
1) Exchange Organization name
2) Administrative Group name
3) Storage Group name
4) Store name
5) Server name

another option would be to use a tool like ontrack power controlls that gives you the abbillity to extract directly from the exchange database files. But these tools cost money.

Is there a way to determine those paramaters by opening a file from the backup?

As far as I know you cannot just extract the information out of the backup files. The Administrative and Storage group are in most installations just default First Administrative Group and First Storage Group, only you need to know the Organization name, or there is a tool called legacydn.exe where you could change the organization name with the database file and still mount it, only thing this is not supported for production environments.

about the office I don't think that when you upgrade to a newer version it would let you see the content without contacting to the exchange server, but I am not 100% sure, so you could try.

We done recovery tests of a sbs from a dell 700 box to vmware.
Activation trhough telephone, you can try installing vmware free version on the hp server.
