How to restore only iPhone text messages to a restored/blank iPhone?  Does 3rd party software exist?

I have an iPhone 4 that has had some software problems and had to be restored.  Once I restore through iTunes,  my problems are resolved but once I go through the second step of restoring from a backup ( so that my text messages/settings/photos etc are restored) the problem resurfaces.  I currently have access to my iPhones text message history but the previously mentioned software bug is back.

Is there some 3rd party software that will let me back up my iPhone text message history, then restore the iPhone to factory default, and then only restore my text messages?  I don't mind losing everything else but the text messages are a must have.

I'm willing to spend good money for a 3rd party application that will simplify the backup and restore process if one exists.

The following software seems to be right up your street and well priced at $9.90:

I see it gives the option to transfer the messages to a Mac or PC, but says nothing about being able to transfer them back to an iPhone (and as far as the software is concerned, it would be a different iPhone, since it will be wiped to factory default after the texts are extracted)

You should be able to use the software to copy the SMS database from the phone before resetting it, then put the database back after it has been reset and that will give you the SMS history.

Steps are outlined on this page:

These instructions appear to be written for a jailbroken iPhone, and that isn't something I want to do.

Again, this software doesn't appear to have a way to restore the messages back to the iPhone once extracted.  (Although it does offer a couple of methods at the end of its site via jailbreaking, with a disclaimer it has no idea if the methods will work!)
I am going to say I am not sure of a way to restore the messages back. I think if you do not jailbreak it, it is going to be difficult.

Thus I am going to offer some further help.

First in this thread here the guy concluded that he could read the messages with a sqlite tool.

My suggestion would be to work with your old backup.

1. First what problems do you get?
2. Try restoring to the back up and then removing everything except for the sms.  So email, apps etc.  Then make a back up of the settings at this point.  Then put the iOS operating system on new again then use this new backup as your restore point.  Maybe the bad things will be gone if you delete everything other than the sms's.
I stand corrected BackUpBot looks like will do your job.

iBackupBot for iTunes lets you control how you backup and manage your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch data. If you use a Windows or Mac computer, you will be able to use your full-sized screen and keyboard to selectively manage your iPad, iPhone and iPod touch files. iBackBot for iTunes gives you the power to modify iTunes backed-up files. You’ll be able to do so much more than you were able to do before, and there’s no “jailbreak” required!
