Hi,

I am facing strange issue with my blackberry new users activations, while trying to activate the new user i am only able to get the old emails which are five days old, i know that by changing the pre-population option in the BES will allow me to syn email up to to 14 days and 700 messages. This happened suddenly even there is no change in the configuration of the BES 5.0.1.58 or Exchange. Earlier all the emails were use to syn while activation the users. My existing users don't have any issues, they are working fine with no issue. The problem is only with the new users. I recently updated my exchange with SP1 but after the SP1 everything was working fine.

Should i update my blackberry server if yes how?

I am using exchange 2010 with SP1
BES version 5.0.1.58

Any suggestions will be much appreciated, if any more info required pls let me know.

You can download the latest service pack (SP3) for BES from here:

http://us.blackberry.com/support/software/server.jsp

According to the BES compatibility matrix, Exchange 2010 SP1 isn't supported with anything less than 5.0.2 BES:

http://us.blackberry.com/support/software/server_exchange_ver_july_20_11.pdf

There are also known issues with 5.0.2 and 2010 SP1, so I would recommend upgrading to 5.0.3.

Lee,

thx a lot for this useful information.I am suing Windows Server 2008 R2 which seems to be supported with BES 5.0.1 as per the compantibility matrix and i am using it.

Honestly, i have no idea how to upgrade to the the BES to 5.0.3, do i need to renew my license key or some changes in the exchange 2010? could you please help me to do so. Also can i upgrade to 5.0.3 directly or i have to upgrade to 5.0.2 first?

thank you.

You're correct, Server 2008 R2 is supported with BES 5.0.1 (not R2 SP1 though), but Exchange 2010 SP1 has a separate section on the matrix which indicates Exchange 2010 SP1 isn't supported.

You can go from 5.0.1 straight to 5.0.3 and upgrading is pretty straight forward. First off, make sure you backup your BES SQL DB. Log onto the BES server using the BESAdmin account. Run the SP3 installer and follow the steps through the install to upgrade.

If you don't have BES HA in place, your devices will stop receiving (and sending) emails whilst the upgrade is in progress. RIM also have an upgrade guide available if you wanted to read through beforehand:

http://docs.blackberry.com/en/admin/deliverables/25795/index.jsp?name=Upgrade+Planning+Guide+-+BlackBerry+Enterprise+Server5.0.3&language=English&userType=2&category=BlackBerry+Enterprise+Server+for+Microsoft+Exchange&subCategory=

I've done a number of upgrades and migrations and generally, they go pretty well. I'll be doing a 5.0.2 to 5.0.3 upgrade on two of my BES servers this week too!

Thanks Lee.

Pls bear with me i may sound a little wired, what is the best possible way to backup the SQL, do i need to backup only SQL? After the SP3 upgrade do i need to restore the backup again? Will there be any complications with regards to the users or license? I hope i don't have to reactivate the end devices or do something like that...How much time it can take for the upgrade since i don't have BES HA in place and i have 29 users connected to my BES server and can't afford to go anything wrong...

The best way to backup the DB is using the SQL Management Studio and back it up directly (SQL MS > Right click DB > Backup (Full)). You won't have to restore the database after the upgrade, providing of course, it goes to plan! Backups should be a part of any upgrade so you always have a fallback if you need it.

You won't have to do anything with the licenses, they will continue to be valid and work as normal. Likewise, when the BES services startup after the upgrade is complete and the server reboots, mail flow should continue where it left off.

The upgrade will depend on the specs of the server, but I'd expect maybe 15-20 minutes from the start of the install to the server rebooting on completion. Maybe not even that long, but I'd prepare for about 30 minutes that the users could be without connectivity on their devices.

Just make sure you run the upgrade with your BESAdmin account and you read the installation steps as you go along.

SQL Management Studio is not installed instead SQL express is installed which comes embedded with the installer...how can i backup that?
Lee OsborneSenior Infrastructure Engineer

You can download it from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7593

You can either install it on a workstation and manage it remotely, or install it directly on the BES and manage it locally. As you are running Windows Server 2008 R2, make sure you download the 64 bit version of SSMS if you're installing it on the BES.

I downloaded it and trying to install on the BES server but it is showing compatibility issue, which recommends that first i need to install the SP2 for the SQL server 2008. I checked it is 349.83 MB pack. Do i realy need to install SQL server 2008 sp2 first since SQL server 2008 in not even installed on the BES.

I will give a try on the workstation mean while and see.

It depends which version of SQL Express you're running on the BES. In which case, you should install the same SSMS version as SQL:

2005: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8961
2005 SP2: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=15366
2005 SP3: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=14630
2005 SP4: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=7011

Otherwise, you can backup the DB from the command line on the BES using the SQLCMD utility (change the servername to match your BES server and backup location as required):

SqlCmd -E -S servername\sqlexpress –Q “BACKUP DATABASE [BESMgmt] TO DISK=’D:\BESMgmtDB.bak’ ”

I have successfully upgraded the BES to 5.0.3 and everything is working fine. :)

Just for curiosity, I missed the check box of monitoring services while upgrading the BES and later i came to know that i can use these services for monitoring. Can i install them separately or if you can suggest a way to monitor the Server or i can configure some email notification in case the server goes down or something..
Lee OsborneSenior Infrastructure Engineer

Commented:
That's great, I'm glad it is all working ok.

With regards to the monitoring, this should be installed on a different server to the BES. If you re-run the installer (on a different server) and select Remote Component, this will give you the choice of the Monitoring Service (off the top of my head).

Hope that helps!

Thanks Lee.

At the end one more clarification, i was googling about BES 5.0.3 and i found something called "Download the BlackBerry Enterprise Server Resource Kit". I wonder if you had any experience of installing this on a BES or working with this, if yes could you pls through some light on it, is it helpful? shall i install etc?
Lee OsborneSenior Infrastructure Engineer

Commented:
I haven't used the resource kit before, but it has useful tools for diagnosing and monitoring various things on the BES:

http://uk.blackberry.com/support/server_resourcekit.jsp

It may be worth installing as you've previously experienced some issues and could help you out if any problems ever arise again.

Hope that helps!
