Text appearing in cell but not in formula bar

I've been given a workbook which contains some cells that I don't understand. If I enter a number in these cells, eg "2", then the cell says "2 / yr". However the formula bar just shows "2". The cell is behaving as a number. Please can anyone explain how this has been done as I can't find where the "/ yr" is coming from.
Thanks

Format the cell as a custom format.

Right-click - format cells - number - custom and type 0 "/yr" in the box.
