asked on

best backup software for a pc

i have a client who almost lost everything including his mirrored drives.

i did a search on BEST BACKUP SOFTWARE and a list of 18 programs came up. not one was the ACRONIS backup software that comes with Western Digital internal hard drives. The software is limited that is included with the drive so i plan on buying the upgrade for $29.99.

One big concern is that the SQL 2008 Express data base which consist of 2 files be backedup without having to stop and start the SQL Services under the SQL Configuration Manager. Acronis documentation says it has some technolgy that will do this. i guess it is like the Symantec Backup Exec open file option that will backup open files.

is there anything wrong with Acronis software or is it as good as anything at backing up a single XP Pro pc to a external hard drive? it does create a bootable Linix if the drive will not boot

We also plan on using Mozy or Carbonite for off site backups. i have considered doing this myself using a Buffalo or QNAP product for clients and charging them the monthly fee myself

Sorry for the long post but it took me over 40 hours to get this sytem up and running with the programs it uses..

My opinion is that Acronis is a very good software for making backups. I haven't tried the SQL-Server option (which is included on full versions) but I made full backups of physical machines and virtualiza to VM-ware: acronis has an option for doing this and it's fantastic.

Another very good software for backups is Symantec Veritas, but it's very expensive and some of its modules you have to buy it apart.

Hope it helps. Regards.

I be sure I you understand this is a window xp pro pc running 2008on sql.  The home version update is 29.00 right now. So if I do a scheduled back up of everything it will even backup the sql database files

I recommend to stop SQL-server databases before the physical backup if possible. This way you will ensure the backup of SQL is useful and not depending on the mode by you are running SQL-server.

i know that is the problem. how to you stop the sql services before backup and after backup for the scheduled unattended backup?

the only way i know is to do a weekly full backup and manully start and stop sql unless the software will allow you to stop certain processes and restart them after the backup..

Acronis says on the PDF manual that they have some type of technology to do a backup of an open file.but i do not know about SQL. especially since Backup Exec has a optional add on to handle sql.

thats why i asked you guys. i may have to da an actual restore myself. this computer stays in a wharehouse and is accessed remotely so no one can physicall get to it.

i appreciate the job you guys have always done.

is there a preference for offsite backup between Carbonite, Mozy, Acronis?

i thought about doing it myself with a Buffalo server or QNAP?

2 people just access this machine remotely in a wharehouse across town.

i may just end up telling them to use Acronis home version  and once a week to be sure to stop the SQL services and do a manual backup. to be sure.

that way i know the SQL Databases are backed up.

Well For EdgeSafe Enterprise backup, i think that you need more than 3 users to benifit.

Storage

Computer data storage, often called storage or memory, is a technology consisting of computer components and recording media used to retain digital data. In addition to local storage devices like CD and DVD readers, hard drives and flash drives, solid state drives can hold enormous amounts of data in a very small device. Cloud services and other new forms of remote storage also add to the capacity of devices and their ability to access more data without building additional data storage into a device.
