I have a compaq presario v5000 laptop with windows xp home edition that will not power on.

when I turn it on, I get the following beep codes 1, 4, 1, 1

I don't know what the manufacturer of the BIOS is.

I have removed the battery and get the same problem.

I get a black screen, no logos, no activity at all. then it turns itself off after about one minute.

I removed both memory modules and reseated them. Inspected them for any problems but didn't see anything obvious like singes, etc.

restated with same beeping and nothing.

Memory can be tested by removing 1 module first, then try again. What is your HP type btw?

the first ram chip has a wire soldered to it, so I remove it from the clip, but not close up the laptop. The second one is to the right under another shield and is a b!tch to get out, but it can be removed. I did remove the second one and tried to start it again but still get the same beep codes.

Please explain "HP Type" , this is a compaq presario V5000 laptop.

The first list shows 21 Laptops/Tablets/Netbooks, which one do you have?

I checked the manual, the module with the leads is probably your WiFi card. You don't have to remove that one, just the memory module under the metal shield. Are you sure about your error code 1,4,1,1 because I can't find that code at the HP/Compaq site. 1,4,1,1 is 1 short beep, 4 short beep, 1 short beep, 1 short beep right?
I just fixed s similar problem. I check the whole thing out good.
It turned out to , have a bad Motherboard battery.

It allso had 3 bad electrolytic capacitors.

I had to set the BIOS to Factory Dealt after repairs.

You ma have a simlar issue.
