I have windows firewall service stopped, when I try to restart it, it gives me error:
windows could not start the firewall service on local computer
error:1068 The dependency service or group failed to start
I restart the dependency services[shown in dependency tab] but still can restart the windows firewall service.
when I try to turn on the firewall from Control panel,it opens a new page where it say "Update your Firewall settings----windows firewall is not using the recommended settings to protect your computer "
if I click Use Recommended Settings, I get error:
"windows firewall can't change some of your settings"
error code 0x8007042c

Any idea?

thanks

Just last week i got same error on one of my PCs i use, i tried allot to fix this issue, i don;t say that it cannot be fixed however such error is due to a virus which affected my machine and the strange thing is that the AV deleted some dll files and due to dependency on those files the services were not getting restarted so finally i had to do a fresh installation.
try this link and let me know the outcome, its a microsoft fix:

sorry
tried it and rebooted the PC, stil the same issue, I can NOT turn on/off my firewall
Commented:
Create a system restore point...first.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MpsSvc and delete mpsvc ...whole branch.

Then download the regfix...merge it

after that run sfc /scannow....reboot and then check.

Do not miss any steps.

followed the steps and rebooted, unfortunately it did not resolve the issue.
Commented:
Do a repair install

Boot to desktop...insert the windows 7 disc...launch setup...click upgrade option....this will repair your windows install... complete the repair install.

You will not loose any data or programs during the repair install process
