Have you made sure Guest Additions are installed in the virtual machine.

this section of the manual may help

http://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch04.html#sharedfolders
Check for the guest editions and still if you have problems then better connect the VM NIC with VirtualBox Host-Only Network and assign the range of IP address and access the host folders.

yes, if you do not have guest additions installed you will be missing those features.

Mount the guestadditions.iso in the cdrom driver of the virtual machine, and install them in the OS.

How do i install this iso file?
open the required VM and run the virtual machine,  go to devices tab and there you will see an option of install  guest additions, click on it and you will see a screen click next and go ahead and restart the machine, then check for the option such as folder share you required
