Why is it not good to create indices on every attribute, and ever combination of attributes that is a potential search key?

Indexes take space.  In addition, when data is modified or inserted, all the indexes that cover the updated field need to be updated.  It can be quite easy to have more space taken by indexes than is taken by the data itself.

It is a balancing act, you need to have enough indexes that you SELECTs run well, but not so many that your UPDATE and INSERTS bog down, or you use all of your expensive disk space for indexes that are seldom or never used.
