I cannot seem to find this on the compatibility guide.  Do any of you know if this is compatible?  I run the .iso for the first time, and it hangs at 95%.  I let it run for a day or two, and it didn't get passed 95%.

VMWare Server has been discontinued by VMWare.

the last stable release was:2.0.2 (Build 203138) / October 26, 2009

http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmserver2.pdf  does not have R2 listed as a supported OS, however 2008 is listed.

I would try to download or burn another ISO as yours might have gotten corrupted. Please try burning it again and see if that helps.
I do suggest you get VMWare ESXi or vsphere. those have superseded VMWare server.
those also do not require an underlying operating system. those run bare metal. so you are not having the extra overhead of a host OS.

and with esxi you can try it free for 60days, thats the full version advanced plus so all the top end tech works and then after 60 days these get disabled in the free version
if you have problems getting esxi working I suggest you look at whitebox hcl's to build a selfbuild server just to check it out as I have got numerous servers working for esx 3.5 and 4.0/4.1 by changing the nic and hdd controller
I think for 2008 r2 you need 3.5 update 01 anf 4.1 as all previous versions don't work properly with r2

R2 is not listed on the compatibility list for Server 2.0.2 you may get mixed results. As the product is no longer being developed I would recommend on of the other free Hypervisors.

Thank you for the responses everyone.  Hanccocka, very useful information.  I indeed am using my home workstation for lab work, and do not want to run anything "bare metal".  So, I'm glad you provided me with "hypervisor" options.  I'm not into paying, so vmware workstation is out...looks like VMWare player is the replacement for VMWare server.

Thank you all for your help.

I have a home lab for vsphere 4.0/4.1 if you need any questions feel free to ask on here as a few others have home test esx / vsphere labs and vmware brought out vsphere v5 3-4 weeks ago
