gmail running out of space, need to archive to local folder via Outlook 2011 mac

Background:
One of our users who happens to use mac needs to archive her old emails locally, as her Gmail is full. At first I thought, no biggie, I'll just create a local folder in Outlook, and she can drag her old stuff in there. Well, it doesn't seem to be working quite that smoothly. We tried moving folders which sometimes works, sometimes not. She can click on individual messages, wait for them to load, and move them one by one, but this is very time consuming, and not a long term solution.

The Question:
Is it possible to create a new folder (or label, as gmail liks to call it) in gmail, and then have just that on folder sync with outlook via POP, so that anything in that folder would automatically be downloaded to Outlook and deleted form gmail? I haven't found where Outlook let's you do something like this. Thanks in advance

In GMail I don't think you can sync just one folder no matter what protocol it is.  And POP only looks at the way the server is set up, so if there's a folder on her client machine that isn't on the server side then GMail won't see it either.

And I take it that she's using her Outlook client for gmail right?  I'm not sure but it may be possible to download all of her gmail emails into outlook, but that also depends on all of the server settings as well.

hmm... I've tried downloading everything, but that's not a solution either. I wish someone at Google or Microsoft would come up with some sort of solution to make Gmail and Outlook talk to eachother. I guess the market share of users who use Gmail AND Outlook AND Mac is just now big enough for them to give a hoot. Sure makes life hard for those of us who have to support those users though.

Oh, I think I understand now what you're saying. I could configure Outlook to use POP, which will download all of the messages, but leave the setting in Gmail to keep the messages on the server. The downloaded emails in Outlook are now the "archive copy". Then the old emails could be manually deleted on Gmail, while the copy in Outlook is preserved. Am I right about this?
Yep you are exactly right!
