cable router

I have virgin cable Internet with a supplied virgin modem that I have added a Dlink wireless router on. this has worked for years.
I now have acquired a Dlink dir-635 router which I hard reset, plugged in the virgin modem to the WAN port and a computer to one of the 4 ports using cat5e, just like the old router. the routers WAN status never gets a WAN IP and never moves from 'establishing - please wait'
any ideas? not 200% sure this is virgin cable compatible...

It is possible that you have to call your internet service provider (ISP) virgin in your case, they may need to reset the locked mac address from the previous router you were using. Some ISP permit the using of only one mac address per internet connection and if you are connecting a new device they may need to reset it on their end. Usually unplugging the virgin modem for a few minutes will do the same thing, or you may need to call them first.

It really sounds like the router is not acquiring an ip address from your ISP, I would call them as the problem maybe on their end.

Can you set the WAN MAC address to the same as on your old router?  If so, try that - Virgin Media's helpdesk isn't the best, so it may save you several hours!!
