XP sp3 no windows updates

Rebuilt a laptop...
My XP OEM cd is SP1...installed that...
Then installed SP2 from a CD...
Then installd SP3 from a CD....

When I go to windows update...I get re-directed to a Microsoft site telling me that I may not be able to update because my computer does not have the latest updates...

Did a lot of googling...not really finding anything pertinent...
Installed the WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe...no joy...

Kinda at a loss...ideas appreciated...

I just ran into this very issue not an hour ago.

Turn on automatic updates.  Wait.  Automatic Updates will download an unlikely update that deals with download compression.  After installing and rebooting, Windows Update operates normally.

Ok...Automatic updates were on...I'll let it sit overnnight and see what
I got in the morning...

Also, I did notice that it did do 2 updates...B898461 and a ServicePackUninstall...

thankx for the input...
