avoiding a full table scan

I have developed a stored procedure and I would like to avoid any full table scans for any of the queries I use. I am able to see the explain plan for the two main queries in the stored procedures and they don't have any "Full table scans" - I don't see the words. And in most cases an index is used. Is this is the right approach to avoid full table scans? What else could be done? I am using Embarcadero Rapid SQL and Sybase.
