asked on

ESXi - How can I locate the disk that the ESXi OS is installed on?

We have an ESXi machine that has several disks configured.  I am confident that the OS is on a disk called 'datatstore' but I am wondering how I can confirm this.  I've searched in the VSphere client but nothing jumps out.
Thanks in advance,
Terry

Also, you can login to the console, of the server via SSH or at the KVM, and use

fdisk -l

this will also show the installed partitions.
datastore is a partition on the logical disk, datastore is a VMFS partition. It's possible that ESXi is also installed at the beginning of this logical disk, in several partitions.

Unless it's installed on an SD card or USB flash drive.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.  This is what I am seeing.  Currently I do not have access to the console.  For sure not installed on SD for Flash.
Thanks again,
Terry

those primary partitions on that sata disk are your ESXi OS install.
the vmfs partition just makes up one partition of the installation, and its formatted as vmfs, and given a friendly name datastore1. usually the free space leftover from the esxi installation on the disk.

VMware, a software company founded in 1998, was one of the first commercially successful companies to offer x86 virtualization. The storage company EMC purchased VMware in 1994. Dell Technologies acquired EMC in 2016. VMware’s parent company is now Dell Technologies. VMware has many software products that run on desktops, Microsoft Windows, Linux, and macOS, which allows the virtualizing of the x86 architecture. Its enterprise software hypervisor for servers, VMware vSphere Hypervisor (ESXi), is a bare-metal hypervisor that runs directly on the server hardware and does not require an additional underlying operating system.
