Travelling with an iphone

Just got an iphone 4 from a phone service provider on a 3 year contract in Canada.  Am going to be travelling into the US but have heard the horror stories about returning to roaming charges.  So i was considering unlocking it and getting a temp sim card with decent coverage for my week-long trip.  Will the phone relock properly after an pdate through itunes?  Are there any other dangers in doing this to my iphone?  Any advice?

Thanks for your quick response!  So if i unlock it, it should accept any simcard for US service with no hassles?  And should also still work with my existing phone service provider card when i return?  Might seem like silly questions but my plan is to order a sim card that has the air/data coverage i need then return the phone to normal when i get back.  All this based on me checking out the link you provided above, of course.
