XP Pro Freezes when I sort by the author column in Windows explorer

I have experienced this on more than one Dell machine. but when I add the author column in Windows explorer and then click the column heading to sort by author, the PC freezes. Thats the only column that this happens under. I am seeing this on more than one PC and it does it on both local folders and a network mapped drive.

I nuked and repaved one PC and it still did it without adding any AV software as well. Very frustrating that it still did it on a clean install.

Anyone else out there run into this?

Is this all the same data across multiple machines? Doesn't start to enumerate the Authors in the column and then freeze, or only when sorting alphabetically on Author?

First things that come to mind, is that you have some data issues, maybe some bad tags onnthe files, or maybe some Disk Corruption, but that goes out the window with a fresh nuke/rebuild....

It might be going really slooooooooow. I've been ending the task without waiting for very long quite frankly. I'm still testing that on my end but on a couple of quick tests, it finally did recover. It's odd that it only seems to happen on the author column sort. There must be something about the author metadata that is buried deeper and takes longer to recover? But even that doesn't make sense since the moment you add the author column, that metadata is visible pretty quickly and it only hangs when we click the sort column.

Haven't tried this in anthing other than WinXP Pro 32 SP3. I should test this under Windows 7 64 Pro and see what happens.

Yes, I'm as puzzled as you about why the metadata for that property would show pretty quickly when the column is shown, but then hang when sorted on it.

I wonder if this has anything to do with the "Intuitive File Name Sorting" that was introduced with Windows XP and may have been in its infancy at that stage of development.

From what I can see the option to "sort intuitively" or not doesn't show as a tick box in Folder Options > File Types > View, but is an option in the Windows XP PowerToy TweakUI (under "featured downloads" here:

The "new" sort order explained here:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/xpsortorder.htm
 The related setting in TweakUI for XPNew XP Default sort order (intuitive):

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoStrCmpLogical"=hex:00,00,00,00

Older "Windows 2000" (unintuitive):

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoStrCmpLogical"=hex:01,00,00,00

Just a thought, because I am out of ideas.

At this point i'm assuming this is a universal issue with XP. Thats for the input guys!
