Make sure the service account which is used to run the SQL Server and SQL Server Agent services has sufficient access on the folders. It does not matter which user account you are logged in, it is the SQL service that actually performs the backup.

Verify the Central Admin app pool account (farm account) and teh SQL Service acct has read/write permissions on the folder and share you are backing up to.  Also, you should be using a UNC path (\\server\folder) as the target.

The fact that it got to file 97 in the sequence would indicate that you have permissions/etc.  This looks like it might be bad hardware.  Check the SQL server system log for disk errors/etc.
