Excel - field with text and wrap shows up as +++++

I have an Excel spreadsheet that is used to gather stats from several people. Every once in a while the stuff they enter into one field ends up as a series of ++++'s.  I have checked the format of the field and it is the same as other fields above and below it - text and wrap text. When I clear the field of the text the others have entered and enter text it still comes out a series of ++++. The only difference I can see is that when I go into the format of the field even though it is text like the ones that don't have the problem instead of the text 'example' being blank it's a string of +++++.  Any thoughts?

can post an example of such behavior ?
please strip down all unnessecary cells and leave the ++++ cell and one or two other fields above and below.

Yes, you're right. It is ######. I will try reformatting as General and see if it makes a difference.
