DVD writer not working in windows xp
i am running windows xp on my HP Compaq 6710b and my dvd writer does not show in my computer at all. not even in device manager. it does however work on post when i insert a disc and want to boot from it. so this tells me it is a software issue and not hardware.

Can you access the drive when in safe mode? Also start msconfig and disable any items you might not need.
it can still be a bad drive; the easiest is to test with another one (known good) or with another cable
or test this drive on another pc
once you are sure about the drive - we can look further

another way to test is booting from a live cd :

I guess it's a Hardware problem.
If it's not shown in POST it means that it's not recognized by the system BIOS.
It could be one of these two :
1. A loose cable, possibly data cable
Do you hear the spinning sound from the Drive when you put the Disk into the tray ?
If not possibly power cable is loose.
2. A bad drive. In this case you should call warranty service.
Also check this :
It must not be disabled in the system bios settings.
