Slow file open on Network Share

I have 2 2008 r2 SP1 servers. One is an Application server also providing AD and DNS, etc. The other is a terminal server.  From the Terminal Server when I try to open a file (Word 2010, Adobe 9.0) on a share located on the App server it takes several minutes for the file to open.  This occurs when accessing from the console or as a remote session.
I removed my AV software (trend micro) and no improvement. I tried to apply the hot fix : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/981711 and I get a message that it’s not applicable for my computer. I did get the 64bit version and accessed the download site from the server itself so the auto detect would work.
I did read something about disabling SMB 2.0 but didn’t trust the source.
Anyone have a better solution?

What type of servers are they? It would be helpful to know the specs of the servers. I have seen a NIC driver on a new HP Proliant cause connectivity problems with some equipment and not others.

They are both new Dell R710. App server has 2 Xeon e5620 cpu and 12 gb -Broadcom BCM5709 Netxtreme II NIC. T/S has 2 xeon x5647 cpu 24gb and Broadcom BCM5709c NetXtreme II Nic.
