Malware / spyware query - my gmail was hacked as was xmarks

Is it normal for the amount of packet size information to be sent using win xp, to be approx 50% of the amount being received?  What I mean is, this morning I formatted my PC after some problems only to find that when I installed an old software, it contained malware and I think someone hacked my gmail account which I subsequently changed the password after much difficulty.

How do I know that data is not being "transmitted" in the background in large sizes?

Can they also steal files off my PC or just key stroke technology?  I have installed AVG, Malwarebytes and Lavasoft Adaware and nothing shows up following a clean reinstall of windows.  Not sure which other programme I installed previously though.
