SQL SERVER 2000 mdf file defragmentation

Hi,
I have an 24GB sql server 2000 production database. I realized that the partition that resides has 97% fragmentation!!!. I used the classic windows 2000 server analyze tool to find it. I choose to defragment this partition (always with the same tool) but at the end it showed me a message that the .mdf file did not defragment! I read in the internet that I have to stop the sql server services first before make any defragment. I did it but again the same message. What a hell is that?
Thanks

fomand,
thanks for your reply. You are right. My case have to do with "external" fragmentation of the database not "internal". I will do an internal defragment after "external". The server has raid 1 (mirroring). According to what you said there is no solution by itself windows 2000 and must resort to a tool. Do you have an idea? I can not be alone in the world who wants to do defragment in a RAID 1 server. I have find the Diskeeper as a good solution.
