word 2010

I'd like to create document templates in word that would allow users to  get certain paragraphs based on a particular type of letter.  However, data, such as customer name and so on will come from the database.  I have never created a word template for use, so i have very little knowledge on how to (1) write one  (2) merge it with the database so the users can produce these documents on demand.  I come from a different background and I've leraned some sql.  I'm asked to produce this and I'm told word 2010 may have the answers.  Either that or XSL.  Please help.

Mail Merge is the best option if you intend to stick to MSWord.
