configuring SMTP connector SBS 2011 (Exchange 2010)
Hi all,
our new SBS 2011 server has been installed and configured, the only yhing that isn't working is when we try to send emails outside the network?
I have senta few test emails which haven't been received, can anyone help me to debug and correct the issue?
I can use 1and1 as a relay if need be, but am unsure how to do this with exchange 2010.
Many thanks in advance,
Matt

Hi Guys,
Can you direct me to where the logs woul dbe kept to debug this please?
Heres what I have done. I went to exchange 2010 management console.
In the new send connectors tab I already had an Windows SBS Internet Send Connector (which I have disabled).
I then added the new connector using the wizard.
1. I added my name and select internet from the dropdown.
2. In the address space I added <my domain>.com and selected all sub domains. The address *.<mydomain>.com and address 1 appears in the list then.
3. I selected route mail through the following smart hosts. Here I added the 1and1 details using the FQDN auth.stmp.1and1.co.uk
4. I add the basic authentication details for my login to use the 1and1 relay
5. The source server I leave as is listed
However I have tested the mail again and my mails are not reaching the target external box??
Thanks for all the help.
Matt.

Are there any mails stuck in the queue? if not the connector is working and the problem is elsewhere. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997263.aspx)
If there are mails in the queue then try to see what happens without the smarthost (just DNS resolving). Make sure you have a forwarder in your DNS listed though.
Also, don't disable the standard send connector...

Ok,
thanks for the quick reply.
I have enabled the default connector.
From looking at the queues there are the 7 messages I have tried to send in here.
anything I should check in here?
thanks again

the only thing that you can look at in the queue is what error it gave when it last tried to send.

That won't be in the properties but in the queue view itself. Did you test without the smarthost?

Hi,
yes ust diabled the smarthost and retested. nothing has come through. Although for some reason even though I have turned off the smart hosts from the connect properties (it no longer appears in the list either I have double checked). The test email I have sent has appeared in the auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk tab in the queue?
Is there a log I can check anywhere to give a more detailed breakdown as to whether this is successful or not?
thanks again for all your help.

message tracking is where you can view the most things. No real logging that I remember from the top of my head.
Did you reenable the default send connector? Can you telnet to port 25 for smtp.google.com? if not your firewall (or ISP) might be blocking that..

Ok,
after turning off the smarthost in the connector, then went back tot he queue and right click retry. I then refreshed the screen and under the queues for the auth.smtp.1and1.co.uk item the last error now reads
451 4.4.0 DNS query failed. The error was SMTPSEND.DNS.NonExistantDo main; non existant domain
any ideas why this would appear now?

Hi yes I re-enabled the default send connector.
telnet to smtp.gmail.com 25 is working ok.

That means the mail that the domain cannot be resolver by your DNS. Do you have a forwarder set in the DNS settigns? (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc754941.aspx)
Can you get the MX records for that domain returned? NSLOOKUP, set type=mx, type in the domain name you are trying to send to

Hi thanks for the link,
no we have no DNS forwarders setup. Is there a general IP we can use for this?
Ok nsookup returns the following;

timeout was 2 seconds.
Default Server: UnKnown
Address: fe80::7a6d:6e21:4123:b939

Hi,
I re-ran the wizard from the sbsconsle and now the mail is moving????
this is bizarre, although I am still having the issue if ipconfig no information is appearing??

You entered the ipconfig in the nslookup window
To send mail out side the organization you require smtp send connector.
Please follow the below article to create connector.
