Nvidia 3D surround motherboard slots question

I'm trying to build a computer with 3D surround with Nivida video cards (probably GeForce GTX 560Ti, have not decided the model yet). This computer will have three 3D monitors, so I need at least 2 video cards installed in the motherboard.
My question is, most motherboard (which support SLI) has only one PCIe x16 slot, usually they have another one is PCIe x4 slot, may I install one video card in x16 slot  and another one in x4 slot? Will this work?
According to Nvidia web site, the system requirement for 3D surround is "One PCIe x16 slot", so I'm confused.
Any other advice of video card or motherboard for 3D surround is also welcome!
Thank you!

Scissor85, thank you very much for the answer!
After reading you post, I reviewed the Nvidia web site, they only recommended card configuration for surround display, they did not mention it's for 3D or not, that confused me.

Your answer cleared that out. Looks like for 3D surround I have to use GTX590.
Also, for Intel motherboard DP67BG, the Intel web mentioned:
" One PCI Express* 2.0 x 16 bus add-in card connector or switchable to 2x8 PCIe 2.0 connectors". What does that mean? Is there one slot or two slots there?
Thanks again!

Looking at that board on newegg it shows it has 3 PCIex1 slots, 2 PCIex16, and 2 basic PCI slots. Essentially that would work out the way I was describing before. If running SLi in both the PCIeX16 slots you will be running each card at x8 respectively. It's just the way the tech works.
