msbackup will not backup exchange information store

We have a single sbs2003 server running exchange. We are using msbackup to backup all of our data, system state and information store. This is being secured to a DLT-V4 tape drive. We know the drive is OK, as it has just been replaced.

When the backup runs, the data and system state run OK. We have proved this by removing the information store from the selected list, and it runs just fine.

When we add in the information store, or run this on its own, the backup fails.

The report states that the network drive has stopped responding.

The section of the report is as follows :-

Backup of "SERVER\Microsoft Information Store\First Storage Group"
Backup set #2 on media #1
Backup description: "Set created 11/08/2011 at 10:28"
Media name: "Media created 11/08/2011 at 10:26"

Backup Type: Normal

Backup started on 30/08/2011 at 20:58.
The network disk drive has stopped responding. Backup set aborted.Backup completed on 30/08/2011 at 20:59.
Directories: 2
Files: 1
Bytes: 5,242,978
Time:  34 seconds

----------------------

We use the following settings in the scheduled task -

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\switchgear backup.bks" /n "Media created 11/08/2011 at 10:26" /d "Set created 11/08/2011 at 10:28" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "switchgear backup" /um /l:s /p "DLT"

We are really desperate to get this resolved, as having just had a problem with our tape drive, needing a replacement, we have not had a backup of our information store for some time.

Any assistance would be very much appreciated.

I think first I would change the command into this :-

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntbackup.exe backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\switchgear backup.bks" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /j "switchgear backup" /l:s /p "DLT" /um

then I would tried a manual run of the scheduled job - reboot server then go to Scheduled Tasks and run the backup job. Please come back with the result.

thanks for your help.

i carried out your suggestions, securing the information store only, but again it failed.

the report details below :-

Media name: "Media created 04/09/2011 at 08:47"

Volume shadow copy creation: Attempt 1.

Backup set #1 on media #1
Backup description: "Set created 04/09/2011 at 08:47"
Media name: "Media created 04/09/2011 at 08:47"

Backup Type: Normal

Backup started on 04/09/2011 at 08:47.
The network disk drive has stopped responding. Backup set aborted.
Backup completed on 04/09/2011 at 08:48.
Directories: 2

many thanks.

OK, I have been working on this some more. I found that I could backup the information store to the server local drive. I than did a manual backup of the information store, this time to the DLT tape drive. This too worked fine. I then ran the scheduled job using the parameters detailed above, and this again failed.

It would seem that it is something in the sceduled job config that is causing the problem?

What we are trying to achieve is to have the scheduled backup write to whatever tape is in the tape drive. The client wishes to employ a manual rotation of the media. We want the backup to overwrite what is on the tape.

I feel we are so close, but I just don't know enough about the switches used in the backup config, if there is anything you can suggest for me to try, I would be very much obliged.

Many thanks.
