Windows 7 intermittent offline cache "access denied" error

We have a Win 2003 domain. We have a Windows 7 Pro computer with a offline cache. During the day at work all works well and the background sync works with no errors. When at home and connected via vpn, every 2 or 3 days he cannot access his “offline sync “ mapped H drive and gets a “access  denied” error, while the intranet and exchange access is ok. Once disconnected from the vpn at home he can access the mapped offline drive. For some strange reason the vpn connection interferes with the cache access.

He has a mapped drive s:  \\server\data\shared
The offline h drive is \\server\data\shared\users\fred
** (is there a issue with a mapped drive under another shared drive)

The homedrive=c    **(not the mapped drive)
There is no encyyption on the cache.
Thanks

Try setting the mappings to FQDN..... Should restore connectivity when in an Offline State...

Could also be CSC corruption.... Any entries in the Event Logs source "Offline Files"?

I have seen reports that this reg value works in Windows 7. Was a common fix in XP.....

Thanks guys,

I have tried the fixes listed above over the last month. The lack of any event log on the server or the client is a pain and the fact that it does not happen every day is a problem. The user connects in via the windows vpn and if he gets "access denied" he disconnects the vpn and connects again. He repeates this a few times until the offline drive a accessible. If not he does a reboot and starts all over again. We even setup a special account with dial in access to use for the vpn login and this also has the same issues. Note that XP never has this issue. The other problem is that this is not my notebook and it is hard to take it for a week to really troubleshoot as the user needs it all the time and wil not accept a lower grade loaner.

It is a pity there is not a form of logging somethere we can activate.  I will try to recreate the offline cache again.

Thanks for now

Try and complete a FULL sync next time. And FYI, XP had it's own shares of problems with OFfline Files. Most of them have been corrected though, with 7....

Does anyone know of the max size a offline cache should not exceed. We are at 7GB.

Thanks Phil

The only limit is for the temp copies of shares that have Automatic Caching enabled. If using Administratively Assigned Offline Files via policy, there is no limit....
