Developing Kindle-versions

Dear experts,

I have some books that I would like to publish on a kindle (for PC and devices).

1. How do I develop a book in kindle format (the books are in word format)?
2. How can I make sure it can be sold via Amazon (it would be great if I could sell it from my own own website)?

amazon has a "kindle developers kit" that you would use for this purpose.
As you selling from your website, I do not believe that is possible - i think all kindle books need to go through amazon.
