Getting com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPAddressFailedException: 550 5.7.1  when trying to send email from java program

Hi,

Iam trying to send an email and iam using Exchange server to transport emails internally. Iam able to telnet to the exchange server, but when i execute my program it gives me this exception.

Caused by: com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPAddressFailedException: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for sunil.h@thomsonreuters.com

Well the unable to relay pretty much means that you have not specified the application server to have relay rights in your exchange.

Excange 2003 setup:

Exchange 2007 setup:

Exchange 2010 would e similar to 2007

My exchange configuration was at fault and i got it working by correcting that.
