Server licensing

I understand that you have to purchase 2008 server CALS for any workstations or servers that will be connected to that server, but do you have to purchase server CALS for all devices that will be sending data back to the server? We are going to be implementing a new IV pump system at the hospital I am employed with and the IV pumps are going to be communicating via the hospital wi-fi back to the servers sending data across to them.  I wasnt sure if CALs were only for devices containing and OS like Windows or Apples OS X?

Hi,

MS have  a lot of CALs type, even in certain situation you have to upgrade your CALs (by legally buy) to be use with certain MS tech, example: To use Excel pivot in Sharepoint you need to have enteprise CALs instead of standard CALs. There also CALs for user and per device.

It is complicated to say, which one is right for you. But hope this article will give you some ideas, http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/client-access-license.aspx.

Better get SI that familiar with MS CALs so you will not lose so much on CALs.
