asp.net database connection problem

I'm new to .net and I'm sure that this is something simple but am tearing what's left of my hair out.

I have a very simple site using the integrated login which works exactly as it should on my local machine. However, when I deploy to the server I get the following:-

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)" (The stack trace is at the bottom of this message).

I am using this connection string:

<connectionStrings>
    <add name="ApplicationServices"
         connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|\ASPNETDB.MDF;User Instance=true"
         providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
  </connectionStrings>

The Sql Express installation is I believe the same on the server as on my local machine.

Is there anything obvious or perhaps a definitive check/idiot list to go through as I seem to be going around in circles!

Any help greatly appreciated.

Best regards

Grant

Your SQLExpress instance needs to configured to accept remote connections. Have a look at
