Outgoing messages are not going to the outbound queue.

All of a sudden this morning, outgoing messages to external recipients are failing.  Internal messages are sent and incoming messages are received but mail to outside addresses is failing.

I am not very familiary with Exchange but i am caught up in this emergency situation.  I did check the message queue on the exchange server and it looks like a few messages are caught up but i don't see any of my test emails or anything sent recently from other users.  

any advice would be helpful.  thanks
