i would like to know difference between jsf custom component

Flow of initial request for Custom components from phase 1 to Phase 6

and       
Flow of Postback request for Custom components from phase 1 to Phase 6.

I was not clear on this concept.Why, why, how each process will be initiated.  Thanks in advance
